23 Weeks

We have no new news of our own...but lots of updates for other friends....

Our family has finally recovered from a yucky battle with the Flu. We are soooo very thankful for Tamiflu and the way it really helped the kids have very a mild case. I was not so blessed, got to the doc too late for the miraculous Tamiflu med....so I checked out of this world for 7 days. As I return to reality and computer blog world...I am thrilled to hear of fellow buddies and all the recent referrals. Congrats to the Thorne's, Roberts, and Farmboy and Buttercup.

Wishing I had my camera, we also recently had the awesome opportunity to have dinner with fellow DFW adoptive fams. We have the best, the best community of friends here in DFW. I got to hold the Frey's sweet Nathan....oh he is too cute! And we look forward to meeting the Lydick's beautiful new girl soon too. Check out their new families!!!

And as we welcome fellow bloggers and new friends back with their children, my favorite part is always to see the pictures. I love seeing how God has built their families and developed in each of them a love of Ethiopia. The pictures do a wonderful job telling each story of love. Below is I think my favorite picture so far (Amanda-is it OK that I post it here?) I love its simplicity and order. I love the closeness and innocence of these precious children. I love their uniforms...I think it is nap time at an orphanage Kindergarten age class. And I love to think of the love our Father has for each of these precious, precious lives. Thank you Jesus!

Our Journey

As we are on WEEK 21/5 MONTHS (WOW!!!) of this journey to our children...I am choosing to focus on another journey. Since we have had children, I have longed to make Easter as significant a holiday in my children's hearts as Christmas is. I want them to long for this holiday in ways that they do for Chistmas. I don't know if this is possible....lots of competition! So I pull out decorations, put up a small Easter tree, eat candy, and do have presents. All the same celebrations in spring colors...yet, it is a different journey. The story is a bit tougher to teach to young kids. It is a story of betrayal and death and sacrifice....and love and life and eternity. It is the most importnat story we can share with our kids. And we are having a blast diving into it. Here are our favorite Easter ideas.... We love the Veggietale's Easter Carol...it tells the whole story. We love Family Life's Ressurection Eggs....they are a must for young visual kids! And I love Helen Haidle's book about this journey....it is the love story of Christ's journey to the cross for me and you. (And I love children's books that teach me...and I actually learned so much form this book) Praying for us all on our journeys....

20 weeks and smiling:)

I understand the longing you first time Moms out there feel....to hold you child and do all the Mommy things you long for. I remember that feeling, how hard the wait was as we waited to see when the Lord would bring us our very longed for 1st child. And as I play Star Wars, tickle my children, give hugs and kisses, make PBJs, drive carpool, snuggle before bed, etc... I think of you all and really pray for you & your wait. I know it is hard and pray that it is not much longer!!!

And I pray for all of us...as we wait for the phone calls that give us some knowledge of our children....referrals, court dates, updates. It is never easy to wait....this longing reminds me of that longing we had for our first! We are just as excited and anxious...even more so I think! I am thankful that I get to do all these fun Mommy things while we wait. And I am thankful that the Lord continues to refine me as I wait.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremeiah 29:11

Leave your orphans; I will protect their lives. Jeremiah 49:11

Thank you Jesus for being in control and for loving these children more than we as Moms could ever imagine doing. Thank you for loving us as we wait, sometimes impatiently and with a bit of whining (OK, a lot of it).

And for a good laugh thanks to Lori....watch this video.....

MY TWO SECONDS OF FAME

Beau here. Yesterday at church, the message focused on how God is using our body to help do His work in Central Africa. Anyway, I had the privilege to share a bit of my testimony during the service with a specific focus on the blessing of adoption.

Go to the below link and click on "watch video." My part is about half way into the message (cream colored shirt), so if you are pressed for time, you can just scroll to that. Right after I speak, there is a really neat video showing some of what is going on in Northern Uganda in Gulu and Pader. If you have time, the whole message is pretty encouraging.

Encouraged at 19 weeks

Sweet blog friends thank you for your encouragement. It daily amazes me as I read over your blogs, that the Lord has given me such a gift in you. He has created a wonderful community here and I am encouraged by each of your stories of strength and faith and love. We are now at 19 weeks, hoping for a call soon and praying for our future kids as they wait too!

Look at these two verses that blog friends have reminded me of....they explain well the mixture of emotions involved in adoption and the faith we must have during this waiting process.

Even in laughter the heart may ache, and joy may end in grief. Proverbs 14:13

At the time I have decided,
my words will come true.
You can trust what I say
about the future.
It may take a long time,
but keep on waiting--
it will happen! Hab 2:3

CONGO

Beau here. I received this video link yesterday. It is a very well done video on the current events in eastern Congo, which is where I have gone for some period of time on each of my trips to Africa. I warn you it is a bit disturbing, though I think worth watching. This is where I first fell in love with the orphans of Africa. I was preaching at a church that had about 200 attendancts, including about 125 kids. I just thought they had big families, until I visited a small orphanage with 62 kids (with one care giver), all of whom I recognized from church. My heart was broken.

WAITING ON OUR KIDS - GROAN OR GROW?

Beau here. Still reading through Acts and God really used this morning to point me back to Him as we wait on "the call." I read most of Acts 7 this morning where Stephen gives the Jewish leaders a brief history lesson on the early nation of Israel. The history includes a recurring pattern:
1. A person (or group) is taken out of their comfort zone
2. The person either rebels and groans or the person radically grows
3. God then works a miracle either in spite of the groaner or through the grower

Examples of the groaners Stephen mentioned includes Joseph's brothers, Moses (at times), roaming Israelites in the desert, the Jewish leaders who killed Jesus.

Examples of the growers Stephen mentioned includes Abraham, Joseph, Moses (both groaner and grower).

As we wait on our children, I need to recognize two truths from this passage
1. God is sovereign over everything - this is an opportunity for me to see His glory
2. I can use this time to groan, or I can use this time to grow - this is an opportunity to become the man I long to be

I feel like recent weeks have been an amazing period of growth for me and a front row seat to see the glory of God. Unfortunately, this weekend I jumped into the groaner seat. And being one who doesn't like to have a pity party without guests, I took Natalie along for the ride :) Instead of continuing to grow in being the husband and follower of Christ I want to be, I decided to make me the center of my life. Luckily, I think I am getting out of the groaner seat now.

Waiting on our children and hoping I grow and see His glory!

By the way, God's humor in this...I wrote out a lot of this in my journal before typing. As I started typing, I threw on my Ipod. I put it on random song shuffle to randomly play songs from my 200 song collection. Songs played - Show Me Your glory (by Third Day) and I Saw What I Saw (by Sara Groves). Like how He does those "I told you so" kind of things.

I Have A Dream

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character....

I have a dream that one day that.... little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.
As the kids and I listened to this speech today, I cried in Thanksgiving that the Lord used people like MLK to bring us to the place we are today. While our country has a ways to go in race relations, I am thankful that the Lord continues to grow us all to recognize each other as His creation.

Then we read this book (in an attempt to show my kids what life was like not so long ago in New Orleans where their Mommy grew up). I cried again. We talked about past days when we would not be allowed to bring their new siblings to restaurants with us and they wouldn't be able to go to school together!! I am so thankful that the Lord does not leave us as we are, but continues His work in us. And again we thanked God for using normal, imperfect people like this little girl and big people like MLK to show us the love and kindness Jesus wants us to show others. Lord please use us normal, imperfect people to show others your love and do your work.

BOOK OF ACTS AND KENYA

Beau here. As a church, we read through the Bible together in something we call The Journey. This year, we are going through the early church by reading the Book of Acts and jumping out of Acts at the right chronological point into each of Paul's epistles. It is really fun to have 3,000 folks reading the same thing, so when God hits me with something, I can immediately chat with lots of folks whom I know are reading the same passage as me. I have also been fortunate enough to line up a Bible study at work with some folks to discuss the Journey each week.

Anyway, over the past week or so, I have been studying Acts chapters four and five. I have been journaling a lot about two aspects of the passages.

First, the early Christians were radically transformed by the Holy Spirit. You see people who denied their relationship with Christ as He was being crucified now going to engage with those who killed Christ, basically pursuing them the same way Christ did. They are doing the same thing that got Christ killed! They get thrown in jail, and when they get out, they go back to where they were when they got arrested and do the exact same thing. The Sanhedrin tells them to stop speaking of Christ, and they basically say "you want us to obey you instead of God?!?!" They then get thrown back in jail and receive 39 lashes. Ouch. So how do they respond to their brutal beating? Acts 5:41 says "So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they has been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name." Wow! I journaled on this asking myself the questions "Do I view the opportunity to serve Christ as a privelege no matter the circumstance, no matter the call?", "Does following Christ get the first call on my time and resouces, or just enough to make me feel good about myself?", and "Is following Christ a faddish hobby or my life's calling?"

Second, we see the early church using their excess resouces to provide for the basic needs of their brothers and sisters (Acts 4:34, 2 Corinthians 8:13-15). They didn't buy extra TVs, bigger houses, the latest in clothing fashion, etc, all stuff I am guilty of. They recognized that we are all one body in Christ and God uses His people to fulfill His mission. This got me really mulling over Ephesians 2:10 which says "For we are His worksmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them." You see that? God prepared good works beforehand for me to walk in them. So as I journaled, I wondered how often I don't see the good works God has prepared for me because I am too busy serving me. My Christian brothers and sisters are dieing around the world, and I am missing out on the privilege (Acts 5:41) of fulfilling the good works God prepared for me beforehand (Ephesians 2:10).

So as I was working through all this, I got an e-mail from my friend Celestin, at ALARM on Wednesday. Some Watermark friends and I are heading to Rwanda and Burundi on March 8th to teach on conflict resolution and leadership. Celestin asked if we could also spend time in Kenya helping folks work through the trauma healing process resulting from the recent riots that resulted in several hundred murders and a couple hundred thousand folks being displaced from their homes. In addition, they were requesting funds to help provide for the basic physical needs of the people. Of course, my mind immediately ran to the passages I had been meditating on this week, especially Ephesians 2:10, Acts 5:41, and Acts 4:34. God is so cool that way.

Needless to say, we head to Kenya as well on March 8th and have the privelege of living out (at least this one time...still struggling overall though) 2 Corinthians 8 as it says "he who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little had no lack."

Please be praying for us. Also, pray for me specifically, that I would be about Christ, not about me. Grateful for the Word...
